School Profile

Governor Sanford B. Dole Middle School (DMS) was established in 1955.  DMS is a part of the Farrington/Kaiser/Kalani Complex in the Honolulu District, and is comprised of sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. DMS is located on the western edge of Honolulu on the island of Oahu.  The majority of students are from the two major housing projects in the Kalihi community:  Kalihi Valley Homes and The Terraces at Kuhio Place.  In addition, a quarter of the students population live in single-family dwellings neighboring the school.

DMS has six feeder elementary schools:  Fern Elementary, Kaewai Elementary, Kalihi Elementary, Kalihil Uka Elementary, Kalihi Waena Elementary, and Kapalama Elementary.  DMS is a Title I school, with approximately 77% of all its students on free or reduced lunch.

DMS continues to revisit the relevancy of our school vision and mission to better reflect the aspirations of its faculty and staff in their focus on student learning.

Our students and staff strive to show PRIDE - Persistence, Respect, Integrity, Determination, and Excellence to affect positive change in everything we do. DMS fosters the Growth Mindset and middle school philosophy amongst all stakeholders (students, parents, community, staff) while creating an environment encouraging innovation, leadership and collaboration. Various community partnerships have allowed DMS to design leading edge learning spaces.

The Innovation Learning Center, Fitness Center and Multipurpose Room can be utilized by students and teachers to enhance learning outside of the regular classroom space. The DMS Health Center houses a family nurse practitioner where students receive health care; therefore, improving student attendance.

DMS continues to address the diverse needs of our students through Response to Intervention classes for both Academics and Behavior. DMS also offers STEM, pre-AVID and AVID, Digital Arts, Fine Arts and Leadership classes in a continuing effort to develop the whole child. This year, the school is proud to announce full implementation of Ha‘aha‘a, an after school enrichment and tutoring program where students will be encouraged to expand their problem solving and critical thinking skills, crucial to life in the twenty-first century.
